Recent data from the National Alliance for Youth Sports shows that by age 13, 70% of youth athletes drop out of sports due to pressure, fear of injury, or a loss of enjoyment. Even at the elite level, the psychological toll of competition is significant.
While organizations like the International Olympic Committee, NCAA, and US Center for SafeSport have established vital safety initiatives, policies, and trainings to guide positive change, gaps remains in our day-to-day cultural awareness of Sports Mental Health.
Sport Psych MD fills that gap by providing athletes, coaches, and parents (especially in youth sports programs) with education, prevention strategies, and tools for recognizing mental health issues and assisting individuals. With the right knowledge and tools, building a foundation of lasting resilience is well within reach.

Dr. Britt Gonsoulin, MD, MPH, is a physician specializing in the intersection of psychiatry, public health/preventive medicine, and exercise & sports science. Her approach is defined by a unique perspective: the clinical expertise of a doctor combined with the lived experience of a Division I athlete.
Before entering medicine, Dr. Britt was a standout multi-sport athlete in high school, eventually recruited to play NCAA Division I Basketball at Tulane University. During her tenure, her team maintained a Top 25 national ranking, earned two Conference USA Championships, and four NCAA tournament appearances. This firsthand immersion in elite athletics provided her with a deep understanding of the mental and physical rigors athletes face at every stage of their careers.
Dr. Britt took this experiential knowledge into a career in medicine, completing a dual degree in Medicine and Public Health followed by residency training at the University of Washington. There, she learned the management of complex concerns—from ADHD and concussion recovery to eating disorders and injury-related trauma.
Today, Dr. Britt is board-certified in Psychiatry (ABPN) and Integrative Medicine (ABIHM) and is an active member of the International Society of Sports Psychiatry (ISSP). As a high school basketball coach, she remains on the front lines of youth athletics, dedicated to cultivating environments where mental health and peak performance go hand-in-hand.
